Before any breeding program begins, our veterinarians perform a complete breeding soundness exam: for mares, this includes a transrectal and transabdominal ultrasound of the reproductive tract, uterine culture and cytology to rule out infection, and a physical exam of the cervix and perineum. For stallions, we evaluate libido, semen quality (concentration, motility, and morphology), and overall reproductive health. These diagnostics let us catch and treat problems early, set realistic expectations, and design the most efficient (and cost-effective) protocol for your horse, instead of guessing.

Stallion Collection & Semen Services

Our andrology lab performs professional semen collection using a phantom mare and artificial vagina, followed by microscopic evaluation of concentration, motility, and morphology. We extend, cool, and cryopreserve semen to your exact specification, manage stallion booking calendars for multiple mare owners, and coordinate next-day shipping logistics for cooled semen or long-term storage for frozen semen — all with full chain-of-custody documentation for every shipment.

Mare Reproductive Management

Veterinary staff use transrectal ultrasound to track follicular development, time ovulation with hormone injections when needed, and confirm early pregnancy as soon as day 14. We offer full-service mare boarding during the breeding season with individualized reproductive protocols for maiden, barren, and problem mares, including uterine lavage and treatment for mares with a history of fluid accumulation or infection.

Advanced Assisted Reproduction (ICSI & IVF)

For mares that cannot carry a pregnancy to term, are still in competition, or have struggled to conceive conventionally, our laboratory offers Oocyte Pick-Up (OPU) — an ultrasound-guided retrieval of eggs directly from the ovary — followed by Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), where a single sperm is injected directly into each mature egg under a microscope. This makes it possible to get valuable mares in foal using only a handful of frozen or subfertile stallion semen straws, and to breed mares repeatedly throughout the year (OPU does not require the mare to be in heat). Resulting embryos are cultured, graded, and either transferred fresh into a recipient mare or vitrified (flash-frozen) for later use.

For performance and show mares who need to stay in competition, or for older/subfertile mares who struggle to carry a foal, we offer embryo flushing (day 7-8 post-ovulation), grading under a microscope, and transfer into our maintained herd of healthy, cycle-synchronized, proven recipient mares — allowing you to keep breeding, showing, or competing without interrupting your season. Embryos can also be vitrified (frozen) for transfer at a later date, or shipped to a recipient mare facility of your choice.

Foaling & Neonatal Care

Foaling & Neonatal Care

Expecting mares are moved into our camera-equipped, 24/7-monitored foaling stalls as their due date approaches. Experienced staff and on-call veterinarians are ready to assist with delivery at the first sign of labor, followed immediately by colostrum quality testing, foal IgG (passive transfer) testing, and a complete neonatal exam — checking everything from the umbilicus to first nursing — for the safest possible start to life. We can also notify designated contacts by phone the moment foaling begins.

We provide secure, continuously temperature-monitored long-term storage for frozen semen straws in liquid nitrogen, with a searchable inventory so you always know exactly how many doses remain from any stallion. Answers Before You Book

What is the difference between AI, embryo transfer, and ICSI?

Artificial Insemination (AI) places semen directly into a mare's uterus around ovulation — it is the most common and least invasive option. Embryo Transfer moves a fertilized embryo from a donor mare into a recipient mare, letting a performance mare stay in competition while still producing foals. ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is a laboratory technique where a single sperm is injected into a single egg under a microscope — it is used when semen quantity/quality is limited, or when a mare cannot conceive or carry a pregnancy conventionally.

How many cycles does it usually take to get a mare in foal?

With ultrasound-guided timing and a healthy mare, many of our clients see a first-cycle conception rate above 90%. Older mares, mares with uterine fluid, or stallions with limited frozen semen may take longer — which is exactly why we start with a breeding soundness exam to set realistic expectations.

Do you work with frozen semen shipped from another farm?

Yes. We regularly breed mares using frozen or cooled semen shipped in from stallions anywhere in the country. Just let us know your stallion's semen type and shipping details when you book, and we'll time the mare's cycle to match its arrival.

My mare is still competing — can she still have a foal this year?

Yes — this is exactly what embryo transfer is for. We flush the embryo from your mare a week after breeding and transfer it into one of our proven recipient mares, who carries the pregnancy while your mare continues training and showing.

What is Oocyte Pick-Up (OPU) and when is it recommended?

OPU is an ultrasound-guided procedure where we retrieve immature eggs directly from a mare's ovaries, without needing her to be in heat. It is typically recommended for mares that cannot carry a pregnancy, have failed conventional breeding attempts, or need to be bred repeatedly through the year using ICSI.

Do you board mares during the breeding season?

Yes, full-service mare boarding is available during the breeding and foaling season, including individualized reproductive protocols, daily care, and monitored foaling stalls as your due date approaches.
